Happy Earth Day!

earth-day

I took this picture over the Easter weekend in an attempt to capture the simplicity and complexity of the dandelion. I think I’ve always been drawn to them because of their ability to thrive in adverse conditions. In the middle of New York’s concret jungle, a dandelion will pop up between cracks and in alley ways. Men wage wars against them every summer in an attempt to maintain a perfectly manicured lawn. Chemicals are freely dumped, sprayed and sprinkled over these “weeds”, yet they continue to regenerate and return.

What is cast aside and tagged as “useless” is actually one of the most beneficial and healing herbs in the entire plant kingdom. Dandelions have the ability to detoxify the body and help restore the liver to a more functionable and healthy state. They alleviate those nasty hot flashes associated with menopause. Dandelions have long been used in the treatment of cancer and prostate issues. The Amish even use the dandelion head to color their homeade butter.

All of these healing properties are held within the stem and roots. Roots that dig in and cannot be deterred by man’s chemical warfare. I believe the dandelion has alot to teach us as human beings. I say give me a bouquet of dandelions over roses any day and let ‘em grow wild and free.

“What is a weed ? It is a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
